Here’s a scenario every person who’s obsessed with makeup encounters: Walking into Sephora to pick up a concealer or a mascara and suddenly getting lost in the myriad of choices. Sure, you know that Make Up For Ever and NARS make some of the best products out there, but is it best to get a foundation from Make Up For Ever and a concealer from NARS? Or should it be the other way around?

There’s really no way to make a definitive list of the best products from every makeup brand (after all, the same product could work in many different ways for a bunch of different people), but there is a way to get closer to knowing what the best choices are from each brand. We stumbled upon a Reddit thread that found users listing the one product they would choose from the biggest makeup brands out there and we also cross-checked each user favorite with the best-selling products on Sephora, Nordstrom, Ulta and other popular retailers. Behold, the best makeup and most popular products from 13 of your favorite beauty brands.

1. NARS

Everyone and their mothers sing the praises of this makeup company's small but mighty concealer. It's the best-selling NARS product at Sephora and the second best-selling NARS product at Nordstrom, behind the brand's other massively popular offering: the NARS Orgasm Blush. We can personally attest that this concealer is the perfect mix of light and substantial coverage. You can use it as a subtle foundation to hide faint spots or use more of it to cover up a blemish. 

  2. Urban Decay

There are a lot of cult favorite Urban Decay products out there (we're kind of surprised the Naked palettes didn't win), but people are absolutely obsessed with the brand's long-lasting makeup setting spray. On Sephora, it follows the Naked palettes as the fourth most popular Urban Decay product and on Ulta, it doesn't list as one of the most popular products. Instead, the Eyeshadow Primer Potion ranks as one of the most coveted Urban Decay things on Ulta. Either way, this proves that Urban Decay has some of the best formulas for keeping your makeup in place. Both of these products are used to ensure that all your hard makeup work stays on your face through wind, rain and sweltering temperatures. 

  3. Make Up For Ever

On both Sephora and Reddit, the verdict is that the Ultra HD foundation is the best that Make Up For Ever has to offer. There are probably two reasons for this. First, the foundation comes in a huge array of shades — from super pale to the darkest of dark. Second, it supremely blends into skin, feeling weightless while providing amazing coverage. Your skin will look Photoshopped with this foundation on.

This beloved bronzer costs just a little bit more than a subway ride, so that's probably a huge reason why it's so popular. Also, it's the most beautiful golden color that works on almost every skin tone. But while this bronzer is the most popular product among Reddit users, according to Walgreens, the best-selling wet n wild product is the PhotoFocus Setting Spray. 

  5. BECCA

On Reddit, Sephora and Ulta, the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector takes the number one spot. This may have to do with the elevated popularity this product received when beauty blogger Jaclyn Hill worked with the brand to create her own shade of perfector in Champagne Pop. But the other shades are just as mesmerizing. The BECCA perfectors create the most stunning highlight, but also allow for control, so you don't look like you threw a glitter bomb on your face. As one Reddit user puts it, "Gotta love me some highlight." 

  6. Anastasia Beverly Hills

This was a tough one to call. On Reddit, the DIPBROW Pomade — the brow product that started it all for Anastasia Beverly Hills — is the second-favorite product behind the new Modern Renaissance Eye Shadow Palette. On Sephora, the pomade is grouped as one of the best-selling products along with the Brow Wiz pencil and the Contour Cream Kit. On Ulta, the Brow Wiz takes the top spot and on Nordstrom, the Duo Brow Powder gets the best customer ratings.

  7. NYX Cosmetics

Hands down, the most popular and the best NYX Cosmetics product is the Soft Matte Lip Cream. It comes in a massive assortment of colors and has a super unique formula, verging between looking and feeling like a gloss and liquid lipstick, so it never feels heavy or sticky. Some of the favorite colors among Reddit users are Stockholm, a deep peach, and Transylvania, a dark, almost black shade. 

 

  8. MAC

It's hard to believe that among all of MAC's stellar lipsticks and eyeshadows, it's a makeup finishing spray that is the best-selling product. But it's true! The Prep + Prime Fix+ Finishing Mist is the top seller on Nordstrom and a favorite among Reddit users. The spray is like magic; it creates a super smooth and hydrated canvas for heavy to light makeup application.

This is a lot of people's ultimate liquid liner and for good reason. It truly doesn't budge and the super sharp felt tip allows for the most precise cat eye. Although it ranks the highest on Reddit, it falls behind the Lock-It Foundation and the Everlasting Liquid Lipstick on Sephora. 

  11. L'Oréal Paris

This is the one drugstore product that both celebrity makeup artists and everyday people swear by. The budget-friendly lash builder offers insane volume and one tube lasts for months. On both Ulta and Reddit, L'Oréal Paris' Infallible Pro-Matte 24HR Foundation ranks right below the mascara.

12. Too Faced

Too Faced loves to proudly boast that its Better Than Sex Mascara is the number one selling mascara at Sephora and the brand totally can because it's true. If you haven't tried this ultra voluminous mascara, you're missing out. With just a couple of coats, your lashes are sultry but not overdone. Other Reddit users say they equally love the brand's Shadow Insurance as well as the Chocolate Soleil Bronzer. On Ulta, the Better Than Sex Mascara ranks right behind the insanely popular Chocolate Bar Eyeshadow Palette. 

  13. Maybelline

Maybelline knows how to make a good foundation. Both Ulta buyers and Reddit users say that the dark circle concealer would be their one desert island Maybelline product. It's a unique concealer that has a sponge applicator specifically shaped to cover up the entire undereye area. This concealer is closely followed by the brand's Fit Me foundation and concealer line.

Makeup vs Natural Look : Which do men really prefer ?

Girls, we spend countless hours in front of the mirror with so much makeup spread across the vanity it could be a Sephora store. This is all in pursuit of the perfect cat-eye, the expertly contoured cheekbone, and the plump (but not too plump) pout. And that’s not even to mention the countless dollars spent on all the latest and greatest beauty products. But, what’s the motivation behind the makeup?

For some of you, perhaps it’s a love of all things hailing from the beauty aisle, where trying out a new smoky eye or a bright new lip color is straight-up fun. For others, it’s a way to conceal areas you view as imperfections. Still others may inspire to mimic their favorite celebrity look of the moment. However, let’s face it, for many makeup-wearers (especially those who are single and ready to mingle), impressing the boys is a big motivating factor.

But do the guys really like painted faces, or do they prefer a more natural look? Given all the time and resources dedicated to “putting on your face” each day, let’s press pause for a second and get a few opinions from the man’s side. 

What the men have to say

Shape magazine spoke with a range of guys from all walks of life about their thoughts on the so-called face-enhancing goop that is makeup, and what they had to say was nothing if not enlightening.

“Less is more. Definitely. You don’t want to overdo it,” said actor Adrian Grenier. “If you don’t exude beauty from within, no amount of makeup will be able to cover that up.”

“I think a lot of makeup actually makes women look worse,” added Glenn Yeffeth, a book publisher. “Have you ever noticed how the women look on the final episode of Survivor, when they’re back from the island and finally get all made up? They go from being naturally beautiful individuals to sort of generically pretty.”

“I love seeing woman in makeup, but like a lot of guys, I don’t like seeing a heavy amount of it,” said radio host Brian Kelsey. “Let the makeup highlight your natural beauty!”

“Men want to kiss a woman’s face and not the makeup that’s on it,” enthused Oscar Parra, regional director of Trader Joe’s. “Who wants to feel like they are kissing a mask?”

And, finally, Performance Flight CEO Lewis Liebert summed it up effectively: “Keep it simple and natural. To me, this is the sexiest look. Nobody wants to kiss a clown!”

The natural look reigns supreme

Stylecaster took it a step further by polling 50 real men to get a fix on what guys really think about makeup. Each man was presented with two photos of female celebrities — one that featured minimal, natural-looking makeup and the other a more dramatic look. More than 70% of the guys were of the opinion that the natural, fresh-faced look was sexier than the glammed-up femme fatale.

OK, so men liking a natural look is all fine and good. But what about when it comes down to the real nitty-gritty — the digital dating world. With dating sites and apps a dime a dozen these days, does the opinion of men on those sites stay consistent to what we’ve seen so far? Yes — and no.

Alright, so what do you prefer when you are going out ? From my opinion, I prefer light makeup than heavy makeup when going out for shopping or watching movie. With light makeup, we will feel more confident than with no makeup.  TQ :)

The 10 Commandments of Applying Makeup Like a Pro

1)

Never put concealer or foundation on your eyelids as a base, it will cause your eye makeup to crease. 

2)

Use your fingers to apply your foundation if you want sheer coverage and a brush for medium to full coverage.

3)

Always apply powder where you are shiniest first–usually your T-zone–with a very light dusting everywhere else.

4)

You should put bronzer on your neck, face, and chest to even out your skin tone. Be sure to take a step back and make sure everything is the same color.

5)

When applying blush, smile, then dust the apples of your cheeks, then sweep pigment towards the tops of ears, then down toward the jawline.

6)

Trace brow pencil or powder along the tops of brows for an instant facelift.

7)

For even lipstick application, start at the cupid's bow and extend out to the corners of the mouth before blotting.

8)

Prep lids for any eye look with a matte base shadow that matches the lightest part of your face. Dust the pigment all over lids and up to the brow bone.

9)

Instead of looking straight ahead at the mirror, get as close to it as possible, tilt your head up, and bring your chin toward the mirror. Look down as you apply, starting at the inner corner and working your way out.
